Abstract:

The earliest words used for natural flow of air at any speed in any direction close to the earth’s surface are “esin ve yel” from the Old Uighur Turkish period. The word rūzgār (wind), which we commonly use today for this weather condition, is first encountered in the texts of Karahanlı Turkish, Atabetü’l-Hakayık, and Quran Translations where it carries the meaning “time, period”. The widespread use of this word in its current meaning coincides with the 16th century use of the word. In this article we first classify various types of wind by a number of features such as length of blowing time, wind direction, speed and degree of violence, heat, predictability, potential benefits or damages (especially to crops), and whether or not they bring precipitation. Then, at the end of the study, a dictionary list is given. In this study on wind lexicology, we used the dictionary which was compiled by TDK and which is the main reference source for Anatolian dialects. We also used the database uploaded by TDK to the general network which is full of metaphors and images and which reflects the sharp wit and intelligence of the people from whom a tradition between the people and their memories has been preserved .These vocabularies are examined in terms of structure, meaning and origin.
