Abstract In the demographic transition process in Cuba, fertility has been a very dynamic variable, with a gradual process of decline in its levels that began at the beginning of the 20th century, until reaching below the generational replacement level around 1978. This process of decline has accelerated after the social changes that occurred in the early sixties, accompanied by a growing homogenization of reproductive behavior in different social groups and in different territories. Parallel to this, the fertility structure has shown changes throughout the period, regardless of the levels of the variable, evidencing the differences between age groups in Cuban women. This article is the result of an investigation about the structure of fertility in the 90s and the beginning of this century, however initially some reflections on this behavior will be made before the 90s.
