Abstract The present article aims to show that the critical examination of the process of literary translation can contribute significantly to the understanding of the process that leads to the writing of poetic works. The literary material used to inspire our discussion is Brazilian poet Ana Cristina Cesar’s translation into Portuguese of the short story “Bliss” (1918), by New Zealander writer Katherine Mansfield. The material includes 80 notes on the translation of the short story, entitled “Êxtase”, written by Cesar herself, which clarify and illustrate the criteria that guide her translation choices. The analysis highlights that writing and rewriting are related activities, led by aesthetic principles that reveal a great passion for words.
