Abstract:

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the change in the thoughts of the students who took and did not take transcultural care course towards the individuals who came with forced migration. Method: The research is an education intervention study. Within the scope of transcultural care course, subjects such as transcultural health concepts, intercultural midwifery concept and transcultural approaches in midwifery education, ethical decision making and transcultural values are given to the student. This course was transferred online for 2 hours a week, 14 weeks in total during the semester. The data of the study were collected through the Google form using the "Sociodemographic Information Form and Critical Thinking Tendency Scale" created by the researchers. Descriptive analyzes of the data were made with Kolmogorov Smirnov, mean ± standard deviation, Mann-Whitney U test, and the level of significance was accepted as p<0.05. The population of the study consisted of midwifery students at a state university in the Black Sea region between February 2020 and July 2022 (N=310). Since the transcultural care course is an elective course, no sample selection was made. A total of 249 (intervention group = 110 students, control group = 139 students) midwifery students participated in the study. Results: The mean age of the students in the study was 21.9 ±2.8 (min 19-max 30). 44.2% of the students take transcultural care course. It was determined that 83.1% of the students did not have an individual who came by forced migration around them, and 58.6% of them thought that they would have problems when they encountered a patient who came through forced migration. Conclusions and Suggestions: It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the total score and sub-dimension scores of the students who took and did not take transcultural care course from the critical thinking disposition scale. It is recommended to conduct qualitative studies including in-depth interviews with students on transcultural care and critical thinking, and new studies with larger samples.
