Abstract The article intends to shed light on the aesthetics of Chilean author Roberto Bolaño as a way of discussing and displacing hegemonic tendencies in 60s and 70s Latin America. The category proposed by the author himself, "visceral realism," allows us to explore its scope and transformations. The idyllic, magical and marvelous Latin America –partly sustained by the Cuban revolution- is broken by visceral realism as it reflects upon the remains left by dictatorships, delving the viscera of History. We argue that Bolaño, against Caribbean traditions of the marvelous or magic realism, choses spectra and nightmares of the Rio de la Plata fantastic tradition. We focus on two stories from Llamadas telefónicas.
