Objective: For the purpose of determining the mental state and quality of life of youth who live in an orphanage for boys, this study was conducted as a descriptive type of study January 2004 at the Bornova Orphanage for Boys. Material Method: The research population was all of the 103 teenages between the ages of 12-20 years who are registered at the orphanage. The data collection tools for the research were a questionnaire that contained questions about the teenages' sociodemographic characteristics and their opinions about the orphanage, a General Health Questionnaire 12 and Quality of Life Scale. Results: According to research findings; in the examination of the distribution of the boys' SF 36 and GHQ 12 score means it was determined that the mean general health total score for the boys was 3.12, the SF 36 emotional role subscale mean score was 57.2 and the physical function subscale mean score was 87.9. Conclusion: In conclusion the score for the mental state of the boys staying at an orphanage for boys was seen to be near the at-risk value, and it can be said to have negatively affected their perceived quality of healthy life. ln addition the emotional state and quality of life for teenages who had lived at the orphanage for a long time were at risk
