Despite evidence that individuals with bipolar disorder have neurocognitive impairment that persists during euthymia, decline in cognitive functioning during the illnes has not been well established. Several risk factors were reported, such as early onset of illness, prior number of hospitalization, psychotic features, and number of past episods. However there is limited evidence on the relationship between cognitive dsyfunctions and pharmacotherapy and comorbidity. Furthermore, the prognosis of cognitive dysfunction over time is unclear. Cognitive dysfunctions may be an endophontype in bipolar disorder leading disability. Cognitive aspects of bipolar disorder and its treatment if can be investigated via simultanously conducted genetic and imaging studies invaluable information can be obtained on this important matter.
