Abstract:

The Ottoman advice letters (Nasihatname) is one of the most penned literary species in the Turkish Literature. They can be found since the appearance of first written works of Turkish language. There are numerous advice letters written by the elders of the state, cult leaders, Islamic scholars and many poets and writers in the Turkish Literature. Among these types, there are texts and works in which fathers give advices to their sons, grandfathers give to their grandchildren, mothers give to their daughters and uncles give to their nephews. Some of these works were written as a separate work in the form of translation and compilation, and some of them written in the level of verse form. In this article information were given about the advice letters that were written by parents for their children, nephews or for their grandchildren and reasons for writing these Advice Letters and their features of literary style were tried to be explained. Besides, the article focuses on the most discussed issues of these literary works. Luqman Hakim's advices to his son and its effects on the most discussed issues in advice letters were evaluated in the context of writing advice from father to son. Some love masnavis and some of the advices which were written by poems with mothers mouth and were given by mother of heroes to their daughters in the nineteenth century were investigated. Similarities and differences of advice letters that are written by parents to their children with other types of advice letters were also discussed in the article.
