Geleneksel zihin felsefesi alanı çalışmaları, Antikçağ’daki ve Ortaçağ’daki ruh yaklaşımlarında temellendirilebilir. Modern dönemde “ruh” kavramının yerini “zihin” kavramı almıştır. Bu değişimde en önemli rolü Descartes ve insanın doğası ile ilgili olarak ortaya attığı düalite fikri üstlenmiştir. Descartes’ın ruh ve beden düalitesi savı, zihin felsefesindeki bir sorunun varlığını netleştirmiştir. Öte yandan, bazı modern dönem filozoflarının Descartes’dan farklı olarak özdekçi bir yaklaşım öne sürdükleri görülmüştür. Modern felsefenin kurucusu olarak kabul edilen Descartes, felsefede Ortaçağın Tanrı merkezli tartışmaların yerini akla yönelik soruşturmalara bırakmasında önemli bir rol üstlenmiştir. Descartes’ın insanın doğasına şüphe ile yaklaşımı, zihin felsefesinde önemli bir problemi doğurmuştur. Descartes, şüphecilik olarak adlandırılan sorgulama yönteminde, her şeyden şüphe edebileceğini ama insanın zihninden şüphe edilemeyeceğini iddia etmiştir. İnsanın zihninden süphe etmesi bir anlamda kendi varlığından şüphe etmesi demektir. Özdekçi yaklaşıma bakıldığında zihnin doğasını indirgemeci bir yaklaşım ile ele aldıkları görülmektedir. Bu çerçevede zihinsel olan fiziksel olana indirgenmiştir ve var olanın sadece madde, enerji veya boşluk olduğu iddia edilmiştir. Zihinsel olanı ifade etmek için kullanılan terimler incelendiğinde ise fiziksel olana ulaşılacaktır. Bu çalışma, zihin felsefesinde modern dönemde ruhtan zihne geçişi, Descartes’ın ruh ve beden kavramlarını nasıl ele aldığı ve bu düaliteye özdekçi filozofların karşı çıkışı derinlemesine incelenecektir. Bu sayede modern dönemde zihin kavramına yönelik iki karşıt yaklaşımın savları açımlanacaktır.
The studies of the field of traditional mind philosophy can be based on spiritual approaches in the Ancient and Middle Ages. In modern times, the concept of "spirit" was replaced by the concept of "mind". The most important role in this change was the idea of the duality that Descartes and the human nature revealed. Descartes’ argument of soul and body duality has made it clear that there is a problem in the mind philosophy. On the other hand, it has been seen that some modern philosophers have proposed an egoistic approach unlike Descartes. Descartes, known as the founder of modern philosophy, has played an important role in placing the place of medieval God-centric discussions in philosophy to mind-oriented investigations. Descartes’ approach to the nature of man with doubt has raised a major problem in the mind philosophy. Descartes, in the questioning method called doubtfulness, claimed that he could doubt everything, but he could not be doubted by the mind of man. The fact that a person is in his mind is that he doubts about his own existence. When you look at the self-reliant approach, it is seen that they deal with the nature of the mind with an humiliating approach. In this context, the mental is reduced to the physical, and the existing is claimed to be only matter, energy, or emptiness. When the terms used to express the mental thing are examined, the physical thing will be achieved. This study will study in depth the transition from spirit to mind in modern philosophy, how Descartes dealt with the concepts of spirit and body, and the opposition of the philosophers who advocate this duality. Thus, in the modern era, the arguments of two opposite approaches to the concept of mind will be open.
The studies in the field of traditional philosophy of mind might be grounded on the approaches to soul in Antiquity and Medieval Period. In Modern Period, the concept of soul was replaced by the concept of “mind”. This change in the conception was mostly due to Descartes and his idea of duality. Descrates’ argument about the duality of mind and body has clarified the existence of the problem in the philosophy of mind. However, some philosophers of the Modern Period put forward materialistic approach to the problem, which is in contrast with that of Descartes. Descartes, a philosopher considered to be a founder of modern philosophy had an important role in the conversion of God centred medieval philosophical thinking to investigation based on human mind. Descartes sceptical approach towards human nature raised an important problem in the philosophy of mind. Descartes’ method of philosophical scepticism puts forward that one can doubt for evertyhing except the existence of human mind. Arguments against the existence of human mind will be one’s rejection of one’s own existence. When we consider the materialist approach we can conclude that it is that of a reductive one. In this respect, the mental was reduced to the physical and what exists is argued to be matter, energy or space. When the terms used to express the mental is analysed, one can reach the physical. The present study investigates the change from the concept of soul to the concept of mind in modern philosophy, how Descartes discusses the concepts of body and soul and how the duality was opposed by materialist philosophers. In this way, the argumants asserted by the two opposing modern approaches to the concept of mind would be revealed.
