Soğuk Savaş sonrası dünyada çeşitlenen aktör ve tehdit yelpazesiyle genişleyen yeni güvenlik alanını açıklama amacıyla ortaya çıkan teorilerden biri de güvenlikleştirmedir. Güvenlikleştirme teorisinin alt sektörlerinden biri olan toplumsal güvenlik dini de tehdit altında olan referans nesnelerinden biri olarak incelemektedir. Toplumsal güvenlik dinin aşırılıkçı yorumlarını yapan ve bunu terörün nedeni haline getirenlerin temel endişesinin, inandıkları dinin tamamen yok olmasından daha çok, içeriğinin değiştirilmesi olduğunu iddia etmektedir. Böyle bir durumda topluluk üyeleri inançlarına yönelik varoluşsal bir tehdidin varlığından söz ederek, dini savunmak için harekete geçebilmektedirler. Securitization is one of the theories that emerged to explain the new security area that expanded with the diversified actors and threats in the post-Cold War world. Societal security, which is one of the sub-sectors of the securitization theory, examines religion as one of the referent objects under threat. Societal security claims that the main concern of those who make extremist interpretations of religion and turn it into a cause of terrorism is to change the content of the religion they believe in rather than completely disappear of it. In such a situation, community members may take action to defend the religion by mentioning the existence of an existential threat to their beliefs. One of the best examples of this situation is the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization. The ideologues of the organization tried to legitimize their acts of violence by presenting the change in the content of religion (i.e., breaking away from the original version), which they perceived as an existential threat, as the justification for the violence they committed. In this context, it can be said that the main threat that triggers the securitization process in religious groups is the perception of changing the content of religion to a large extent.
