Wireless sensor network environments are generally preferred because of their flexibility advantage when compared to wired communication. In this article, performance evaluation of delay sensitive CSMA medium access technique for wireless sensor networks was performed. Because wireless sensor nodes have limited energy, they utilize CSMA medium access technique for lossless data communication. In order to increase energy efficiency, the wireless sensor nodes get into the sleep state when they wait in idle state. After obtaining the analytical model mathematically, the simulation model of the wireless sensor network was designed using Riverbed software. To analyze the performance of the wireless sensor network; the parameters of delay, energy and throughput rate were investigated. When the performance evaluation results are analyzed, it is seen that the average delay is decreased significantly by CSMA technique. In addition, the maximum throughput rate is achieved with the help of wireless sensor nodes keeping the energy consumption at a reasonable level.
