The article is of an overview nature and discusses the publicistic genres of urban German folklore. The paper attempts at preliminary systematization and a brief description of genres, including those that have not yet been extensively studied in Russian linguistics. German urban folklore is characterized by a wide variety of unique genres. Among them are the publicistic genres of urban folklore, such as historical song (historisches Lied), didactic and narrative couplets (Bänkelsang) sung at fairs, büttenrede, schwank, as well as humorous songs, or rhymes (Spottlied, Spottreim). Although some of these genres are described in literature to varying degrees, their typology has not been developed and their language and style have not been studied as well. The article also outlines the prospects for further large-scale research from a linguistic point of view.
