Yahudilikte çocuk sahibi olmak ve çoğalmak dini bir emir kabul edilir. Bu nedenle çocuğun doğumu sevinçle karşılanır. Onun Yahudi Cemaatinin bir üyesi olması veiyi bir dini eğitim alarak yetişmesine önem verilir. Bu amaçla anne, hamilelik döneminden itibaren karnındaki çocuğunu etkileyebilecek davranışlardan kaçınmaya özen gösterir. Çocuk doğduktan sonra da nazardan ve kötü ruhlardan korumak için birçok tedbir alınır. Çocuğun doğumunun ilk bir aylık sürecinde erkek çocuklar için Şalom Zahor, BritMila, Pidyon Ha Ben; kız çocukları için de Şalom Nekeva, Brit Bat, Vijola törenleri düzenlenerek hem doğum sevinci kutlanır hem de Yahudi cemaatinin yeni bir üyesi olmasına yönelik uygulamalar yapılır.
