Abstract This article makes a critical analysis of the main theories that, from a sociocultural perspective, have tried to explain the process of incorporation of immigrants into the so-called host or destination societies, particularly the American one. Given that the main purpose of the author is to analyze those theoretical proposals that allow us to understand the processes of insertion of Latinos in the United States and their sociocultural implications -with emphasis on the processes of shaping the identities that characterize this ethnic group in that context-, some comments and evaluations that facilitate the understanding of this phenomenon are included. To do this, she relies on an exhaustive review of the scientific literature related to the subject, as well as the results of her own research carried out in the last ten years.
