Abstract In Sao Paulo State (Brazil), there is growing concern about nitrate levels in groundwaters because of results from several hydrogeochemical and environmental studies. This study describes the action of health surveillance and the public health laboratory in the detection of nitrate groundwater contamination in the Monte Azul Paulista municipal district located at northeastern Sao Paulo State. Water samples from 75 wells were collected and analyzed. Contaminations were detected (concentrations greater than 10 mgN-NO3−/L) in 38 wells predominantly located at the oldest central urban area. Based on these results, it was possible to decide to restrict groundwater impounding at that municipal district.
