Türkü are mostly anonymous, orally transmitted songs born of the Turkish folk literary tradition. The most authentic characteristic of Turkish folk songs is that they are authentic, performed in regional musical and vocal styles. When türkü are not performed as they are sung in their native regions, this leads to a change in the songs identity, and corruption. In addition to the fact that authentic türkü are not performed as they should be, since the 1990s the writing and performance of pieces known as composition-türkü, has led to the existence of songs unrelated to particular regions, and with no specific musical or vocal style. Similarly, the singing of türkü by performers of other styles such as pop, Arabesk and özgün music, as well as polyphonic performances of some songs in the Turkish folk music repertoire, presenting them to the people in a way distant from the way the people created them, are other factors leading to their corruption.
