Küratörlük, hem icra edilen bir meslek dalı hem de özellikle son yıllarda çağdaş sanata ilişkin okumalarda önemli bir kavram olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Küratörlük, Roma İmparatorluğu’ndan beri kullanılan bir terim ve unvandır. O zamandan günümüze değin farklı alanlarda ve açılımlarda kullanılmıştır. Görsel sanatlar bağlamında küratörün tarih sahnesine çıkışı 18. yüzyılla başlatılabilmektedir. Ancak, zaman içinde bir meslek olarak tanımı ve edindiği roller değişime uğramıştır. Yönetme ve sergileme açısından küratöryal süreci Medici koleksiyonerliği ile başlatmak mümkündür, ancak kurumsal anlamda küratörlük mesleğinin varış noktasını müze küratörlüğü oluşturmaktadır. Çağdaş sanat küratörlüğü ise, bağımsız küratörlük anlayışının ilk adımlarının atıldığı 1960’lı yılların sonundan itibaren gerçek anlamda sanat tarihinde yerini almış ve bir meslek olarak tanımına yeni sıfatlar eklenmiştir. 60’lı yıllarda gerçekleşen önemli sosyal, politik ve kültürel olaylar, sanat dünyasında birçok değişikliğin yaşanmasına neden olmuştur. Bu zaman diliminde ve sonrasında ortaya çıkan yeni sanat akımları, sanat kurumlarına yöneltilen eleştiriler, özellikle 90’larla sayıları artan bienaller, küratörlük mesleği üzerine yeni tavırlar geliştirilmesine ve meslek olarak tanımının sorgulanmasına neden olmuştur. Bu çalışmada, tarihsel (literatür tarama) yöntemi kullanılmış ve görsel sanatlar bağlamında, küratörlük olgusu, tarih sahnesine çıkışından günümüze uzanan süreçte kendisine etki eden sosyolojik, politik ve kültürel olaylar da gözetilerek kronolojik olarak ele alınmış; geçirdiği değişim sonunda, bir meslek olarak çağdaş sanat küratörünün tanımı yapılmış ve sanat dünyasındaki rolü tartışılmıştır.
Curatorism is both a branch of the profession that is carried out and especially in recent years is an important concept in the reading of contemporary art. Curatorism is a term and title that has been used since the Roman Empire. Since then, it has been used in different areas and openings. In the context of visual arts, the curator's exit to the historical stage can be started in the 18th century. However, over time, the definition of a profession and the roles it acquired have changed. In terms of management and exhibition, the curatorial process is possible to start with the Medici collection, but in the corporate sense the curatorial profession is the point of arrival of the museum curatorial. Contemporary art curatorium, since the end of the 1960s, when the first steps of the concept of independent curatorium were taken, actually took its place in the art history and added new qualities to its definition as a profession. The important social, political and cultural events that occurred in the 1960s have led to many changes in the world of art. The new art flows that emerged during and after this period, the criticisms directed to the art institutions, especially the number increasing by the 90s, have led to the development of new attitudes on the curator's profession and the questioning of the definition as a profession. In this study, the method of historical (literature scan) was used and in the context of visual arts, the curatorial phenomenon, the socio-political and cultural events that influenced it in the process from the exit to the history scene to the present day, chronologically addressed; in the end of the change it passed, the curator of contemporary art as a profession was defined and the role in the art world was discussed.
In recent years, particularly, curating has emerged as a profession and an important concept in contemporary art. Curating is a term and a title that has been used since the Roman Empire. It has been used in different fields and expansions since then. In terms of visual arts, the curator's existance at the stage of history can be started with the 18th century. However, its definition as a profession and its roles have changed over time. In terms of directing and exhibiting, it is possible to start the curatorial process with Medici collecting, but the destination of the curatorial profession as an institutional model is museum curating. Contemporary art curating, on the other hand, has taken its place in the history of art in real terms since the end of the 1960s, when the first steps of the independent curating approaches were taken, and new adjectives were added to its definition as a profession. Important social, political and cultural events, especially in the 60's, caused many changes in the art world. New art movements emerging in this period of time and after; the criticisms directed to art institutions; especially the biennials, which increased in number in the 90s, led to the development of new approaches on the curatorial profession and to question its definition as a profession. In this study, the historical (literature review) method was used and, in the context of visual arts, the phenomenon of curating was handled chronologically, taking into account the sociological, political and cultural events that have influenced it in the process from its debut to the present day; as a result of this change that has gone through, the definition of the contemporary art curating as a profession was made and its role in the art world was discussed.
