Abstract:

Smoking addiction is one of the most important public health problems in the world and in our country. One person dies every second due to health problems caused by smoking. Although anxiety, depression, childhood traumas and impulsiveness have been studied among cigarette addicts, the type-D personality pattern is yet to be investigated. This study was planned to meet this gap in the literature. Materials and Methods: This study included 151 cigarette addicts and 100 control subjects (251 in total). Sociodemographic Data Form, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, Type-D Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale were applied to the patients. Results: Concerning the sociodemographic data, no significant difference was found between the patient group and the control group. In comparison of the groups, a significant difference was found in their scores of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, Type-D Scale, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Predictors of smoking were also shown to be impulsiveness, type-D personality, depression, and anxiety. Conclusion: Cigarette addicts have higher levels of D-type personality, depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, and childhood traumas. Moreover impulsiveness, type-D personality, depression and anxiety predict smoking addiction.
