Özet:

INTRODUCTION: Brachytherapy is a kind of radiotherapy giving almost no damage to the healthy tissue but in contrast, the maximum damage on the targeted tumour. ANALYTICAL STUDY: Literature were scanned off by typing 'brachytherapy' in the search motor of PUBMED, Taylor Francis and Science Direct databases. Recently published articles and reviews were chosen to be investigated. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION: We observed that intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy treatment modalities were used frequently in cervix, prostate and oropharyngeal tumours and also that the old treatment techniques were replaced by these types of brachytherapy modalities. In the localization of targeted tumour, 2 dimension conventional radiographs were used earlier. Nevertheless, today 3 dimension imaging were found more efficient than the conventional techniques with respect to the prognosis of the disease. High-speed computers were used to calculate radiation dose regarding the geometry of the tumour. Today, scientists deal with the dose calculation time to become more shorter. CONCLUSION: Medicine's aim, is giving less damaging therapy to the patient respecting the rule of 'primum non nocere'. Therefore, brachytherapy renovates itself day by day, despite the fact that it was lasting for a century almost.
