Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nda modem genel bir nüfus sayımı 1830'da Il. Mahmut devrinde yapıldı. Bu ilk modem genel sayıma dair çeşitli monografiler yayınlanmıştır. Bütün bu çalışmalarda imparatorlukta yapılan çağdaş veya modem anlamda "ilk genel nüfus sayımı" olarak 1830 sayımı gösterilir. Bu doğru yaklaşım olmakla beraber, bu bildirimizde görüleceği üzere, ele aldığımız "1829 İstanbul Sayımı" ülke çapında ve genelolmamakla beraber, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndaki çağdaş anlamda "İlk Nüfus Sayımı" unvanını kazanmaktadır. Bu ilk sayıma dair Tophane Kasabası'nın 8 mahallesini içeren nüfus sayım defteri tanıtılıp, 1829 ve 1830 yılı nüfusları tespit edilerek, değerlendirilmiştir.
