Obesity is a multifactorial disease and is a risk factor for other diseases, such as vitamin D deficiency. There are several factors linking obesity with hypovitaminosis D. This study aims to review recent publications and expose the factors that relate to vitamin D deficiency with obesity. The search of the literature was conducted through the portal CAPES and were selected national and international articles between 2000 and 2014. The criteria for inclusion and exclusion were articles in other languages than Portuguese or English, articles that were not relevant to the criteria imposed, article with animal experiments, and articles published for over 14 years. The key words used were: obesity; vitamin D; Vitamin D deficiency, body composition -the search was conducted in Portuguese and English. Studies have shown that obese individuals have lower serum levels of vitamin D compared to non-obese individuals and identified several factors involved in this relationship, both directly, and indirectly. More studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms involved in obesity relationship with vitamin D deficiency and thus contribute positively to prevent and control these diseases.
