Abstract:

Peride Celal, one of the leading writers of the Republican period with her stories and novels, was known as a “pink novelist” in the early years of her writing, and addressed a wide readership with her serials published in newspapers and magazines. Peride Celal, known for her love and adventure novels, underwent a literary transformation after her “popular novelist” identity after the 1950s, which she called the second period of her writing. Her novel Son Şarkı, which was serialized in 82 issues in Milliyet newspaper in 1951, is important as a transition period work. Son Şarkı is a novel about the life of the sound artists of the period and focuses on love, as in the author’s other novels. Ayşe, who was educated in Europe (in Paris), is the real educated and idealized version of the European type seen in Tanzimat period novels. However, Ayşe is a girl who has limited her European attitude only to her education in the field of alafranga music and loves her hometown and especially her mother very much. Her mother, Nihal Ses, as she used on the stage, is a famous traditional Turkish music artist. In the novel, comparisons were made on Europe/ European music represented by Ayşe, and traditional Turkish music, of which mother Nihal Ses and her surroundings are members. In this study, traditional Turkish music and Western music comparisons in the novel Son Şarkı are discussed. With this examination aimed at the promotion of the work, a work in Peride Celal’s corpus was made visible.
