Abstract:

This study discusses the status of appointmnet and dismissal in the foundations, considered a significant part of the society in the XVIII century Maraş District. It is seen in the written sources that almost all of the services fort he benefits of the society, especially education and cultural sevices, were carried out by foundations in Ottoman social life. Foundations; it became a significant element of economic life with many officals employed in institutions such as mosques, masjids, madrasas, and zawiyas.It is seen that the change that took place in the Ottoman administrative and economic structure since the end of the XVI. century negatively affected the foundatitons institution as well as other institutions. This situation will also be understood from the correspondences in the appointment and dismissal processes of the offical employed in the Maraş foundations in the XVIII. century. In the research, archival documents and examination work related to the subject, especially Hurufat Registers in the Archives of the General Directorate of Foundations, where the appointment and dismissal of court members such as clerks, muhzır; ahi fathers, heralds, and derbent workers recorded, were used.In this study, which aims to examine the relationship between the deterioration in the foundation institution and the appointment and dismissal of its officals, it has been determined that there are officals who were dismissed for reasons such as ignorance, incompetence, abandonment of duty, embezzlement, mental illness, stuttering, cheating, drunkeness, lying, an deven banditry.
