Çadır türü veyahut da mimari tipte evleri olan eski Türkler, yine bu korunaklarını mevsim şartlarına göre seçerlerdi. Konar-göçer hayat tarzına bağlı olarak yaylaklarda ve kışlaklarda barınaklara sahiptiler. İşte bu sebepten, araştırmacılar iklimin çetinliği yüzünden insanların her zaman çadırlarda yaşayamayacaklarını ve kışı geçirmek için uygun yerler yapmak zorunda olduklarını vurgularlar. Türkler şehir, kale, saray manaları karşılığı için umumiyetle kökü balçıktan gelen “balık” kelimesini kullanıyorlardı. Yine “şehir, kale, ev, mezar” manasıyla örtüşen ve “korumak, korunmak, gizlemek, saklanmak” vs. sözlerle alâkalı “kurgan” kelimesini de unutmamak gerekir.
