Purpose:This study was conducted to examine the individuals residing in a nursing home, regarding the relationship between depression, functional independence of gait, and balance function. Material and Methods: Individuals were selected by random sampling method. All individuals underwent Tinetti Balance and Gait Test, Geriatric Depression Scale and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). The percentages of data were calculated by descriptive analysis and the relationship between variables were examined with Spearman correlation test. Results: 26 women (mean age: 80.34±6.79) 7 men (mean age: 73.57±9.57) attended our study from nursing home. Duration of nursing home stay was 7.57±7.17 years. The total FIM score was found 105.64±18.44. The total Geriatric Depression Scale score was found 12.3±6.71. The total Tinetti Balance and Gait Test score was found 16.76±7.55. A positive correlation was found between FIM and Tinetti Balance and Gait Test (p<0.001 ; r=0.610). A negative moderate correlation was found between Geriatric Depression Scale and Tinetti Balance and Gait Test (p<0.004; r=-0.497). A correlation was not found between FIM and Geriatric Depression Scale (p<0.2 ; r= -0.277). conclusion: According to our study nursing home resident’ gait and balance function was inversely correlated with depression and directly correlated with functional independence
