Abstract:

Although the methods of developing reading fluency skills have been frequently studied, there are not many studies conducted in the context of bilingual students, village schools, and secondary school students. This study examined the effect of echo reading on eight eighth-grade students who are bilingual. A one-group experimental design was used in the study conducted in a village school. The reading fluency data of the students tested in 1st-7th grade texts as pre- and post-tests. Descriptive analyses and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that, in seven weeks, students reached the instructional level in the second grade from the frustration level in the first grade. In addition, the average of the group increased in speed and accuracy in texts at all grade levels. These increases were significant at three grade levels for speed and accuracy. The findings of the study were discussed.
