Abstract:

In Turkic speaking peoples, also in Azerbaijan in beliefs system before Islam to worship the Sun was wide spread. The fire was the symbol of the Sun in the Earth, the flames of the fire mediator between Ulken God and people. In Novruz holiday decorated khonchas in honor of the Sun also reflects this belief. It was always the most favorite among all other holidays of Azerbaijani people. Novruz is celebrated every year on the 20-21-22 of March, from the moment of coming of vernal equinox. But, according to the tradition, people start to prepare for this holiday from the last month of winter; holiday celebrations continue with coming of Novruz and for days on end after the beginning of a new solar year. Historically, Azerbaijan is a country of oil, gas, mud volcanoes and therefore, it is natural that for centuries the fire erupting from the depth of Absheron and other many places attracted to Azerbaijan the crowds of fire-worshippers from the vast territories from Middle East to India; these worshippers revered these places as holy lands
