Adult learning theory suggests that learning is most effective when related to need, when driven by the learners and when it is flexible. Assessing learning needs is a fundamental step to ensure the relevance of the educational activity. If educators don’t use needs assessments, they may not know what the learners want and what will motivate them to learn. The needs assessment is a process by which curriculum developers identify the differences between the ideal and the actual characteristics of the targeted learner group. Information related to curriculum development process, learners’ needs, needs assessment process and methods of assessing the learning needs for various educational activities will be presented in this paper.
