Abstract:

This study tried to reveal ideas about math learning experiences in a virtual community created through WhatsApp, one of the secondary school students’ instant messaging applications. The study was designed for 27 high school students to participate. This study, which is based on the interactions of students within the community and the sharing of mathematical content designed within the study framework in the group, has studied the experiences and observations of students. The data obtained through the semi-configured interview form has been made content analysis in the cognitive, educational and social dimensions defined in the theoretical framework of the Research Community. According to the results of the study, students see instant messaging learning as a complementary learning environment. Students expressed their academic problems in an instant messaging environment and expressed that they found the opportunity to discuss with their colleagues through collaborative learning (cognitive dimension), defined their teachers as a leader (educational dimension), found the social environment of the community fun and said that they were pleased to be in a community that makes them privileged (social dimension).
