Tarmac mermaids, queens and other sissies: notes on queer scenes and gender violence in Brazil

Abstract:

In order to understand the nature of violence against the feminine and its reproduction schemes, it is crucial to observe how its inferiorization in the order of gender triggers a network of violence against cis and transgender women, transvestites, effeminate gays and non-binary people. This article reflects upon the abjection of the feminine and its resistance in the Brazilian social-context, based on the proliferation of current pop music artists who derange and reshape gender patterns and norms. These expressions named in the research of deviant musical scenes, by stressing patriarchal, misogynistic and racist values, constitute identitarian engagements and have worked as one of the main mechanisms of the LGBTQI political fight. Based on the notion of the cultural/musical scene, on the feminist criticism of the 1980-1990s and on queer studies, it is proposed to think about how queer scenes negotiate historical traumas and systemic violence, and re-elaborate elements of the dominant culture as counter-discourses. Between spatialities and imaginations, these scenes stand against the notion of the dominant public sphere. It is proposed to think of them as counter-public spaces in which subjects interpret their own identities, interests and needs and re-signify social and community values.
