Abstract:

Verbs have a time element and a way of realization that they have expressed from the first moment of their emergence. This is called “aktionsart”. This feature that every verb has in Turkish is also present in auxiliary verbs in various situations. One of them is the i- verb. However, researchers have not sufficiently evaluated the i- verb in this respect. Thus, the time element described by the i- verb was evaluated in this study. Firstly, the usage of the i- verb was expressed. Then, how it is defined and interpreted in different studies was explained. Afterwards, some sample sentences from both historical and contemporary texts were given concerning the use and time expression of the verb. Some of these sentences including i- verb and ol- (be) verbs were selected in a comparative way in order to explain the subject better. In these examples it is understood that i- verb expressing the situation corresponds to an earlier time than ol- (be) verb which process. Therefore, it is seen that the i- verb with the usage of definite past tense, reported past tense and simple present tense modes, and -sA the conditional gerundium, -dik / -dük participle, and -ken gerundium affixes expresses finaltransformative; thus, affixes expressing future tense cannot be added to the i- verb. It can be said that this is due to the time of the verb in aktionsart.
