Abstract:

Climate conditions are an important factor in the quality of tourism activities and the selection of tourism destinations. In recent years, the diversity of tourism activities and the number of tourists have increased and plateau tourism activities have become popular. In order for plateau tourism activities to be sustainable, climatic conditions and thermal comfort conditions among physical geography factors should be investigated. In the most general terms, thermal comfort is defined as the state of feeling comfortable, happy, and fit in one's environment. In this study, the determination of thermal comfort conditions for plateau tourism activities was examined specifically for the Palovit plateau in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize province. In the study, hourly and daily measurements of the meteorological station number 19058 established on the Palovit plateau were used. The obtained data were calculated based on the PET (Physiological Equivalent Temperature) index through Rayman software. The distribution of PET values within the year at 10-day intervals and monthly hourly distributions was prepared. In addition, the frequency and extremes of all climatic elements were calculated in order to prepare a climate tourism information scheme. As a result of the study, it was understood that heat stress, storm risk, and sweltering conditions are not likely to be experienced on the Palovit plateau. However, it was determined that there is the possibility of snow-covered days that create cold stress, precipitation risk, and slipping risk. When all climatic possibilities are analysed, it is determined that the most ideal period for tourism is the summer. Individuals participating in tourism activities, tour organizers, and local administrations should take these conditions into consideration. In order for plateau tourism activities to be healthy, high quality and sustainable, there is a need for more research investigating climatic and thermal comfort conditions.
