Abstract:

“Etüt Tokat” project has been implemented by Tokat Governorship under the coordination of Tokat Provincial Directorate of National Education since 2019 in order to increase the academic achievement of eighth grade secondary school students throughout the province. Within the scope of the project, support and training courses are opened with the assignment of successful teachers in the schools determined throughout the province. Students attend these courses without paying any additional fees, and additional resource support is provided to students for exams. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of support and training courses organized within the scope of the “Etüt Tokat” project on the achievement of LGS of eighth grade secondary school students. Explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed method researches in which quantitative and qualitative data were used together, was used in the research. In the research, trial exams in support-training courses were used as a quantitative data collection tool, and a semi-structured interview form developed to determine students’ views on these courses was used as a qualitative data collection tool. In the analysis of quantitative data, descriptive statistics and dependent groups t-test data were used. Qualitative data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. As a result of the research, it was concluded that there was a significant difference between the scores of the first and last test exams attended by the students in the courses organized within the scope of the “Etüt Tokat” project, and that the students stated that the support and training courses had a positive effect on their LGS success. Based on these findings, it can be stated that the support and training courses organized within the scope of the “Etüt Tokat” project have a positive effect on the secondary school eighth grade students’ scores in LGS.
