Material and Methods: A total of 122 children aged between 6-14 years were included in this retrospective study, of which 57 were girls and 65 of boys and divided into 6-8, 8-10, 10-12 and 12-14 age groups. Of the 30 left-handed children, 14 were girls and 16 boys. The determination of the left-handedness was made by asking children which hand they preferred predominantly in daily work and physical activities. Body parameters height, weight, BSA and BMI were determined. They were tabulated according to age groups, gender and hand preferences (right-handedness, left-handedness). SPSS 15.0 was used for statistical analysis. Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and multivariate ANOVA test were used to determine the differences. Results: There were statistically significant differences in height, weight, BSA and BMI among age groups (p<0.001). A significant difference was observed in body weight and BMI between boys and girls in the 10-12 age group (p=0.030, p=0.037, respectively). Significant differences were observed in body weight, BSA and BMI between boys and girls in the 12-14 age group (p<0.001, p=0.009, p=0.013, respectively). Conclusion: No statistically significant difference was found between the left- and right-handed children in body parameters. Keywords: Child Right-Handedness Left-Handedness Body Parameters
This study examined whether there were differences in body parameters between right and left children aged 6-14 years, such as size, weight, body surface area (BSA) and body mass index (BMI). In this retrospective study, 122 children between the ages of 6 and 14 were included, of which 57 were girls and 65 men. Of the children divided into the age groups 6–8, 8–10, 10–12 and 12–14, 14 girls and 16 boys, in total 30 are left. Leftness was detected by asking the children which hand they prefer as overwhelming in their daily work and physical activity. Children’s body parameters such as size, weight, BSA and BMI have been determined. These were classified according to age groups, gender and hand preferences (right, left). In the statistical analysis, SPSS 15.0 was used. The Student t test, Mann-Whitney U test and the multivariate ANOVA test were performed for the discovery of the differences. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in size, weight, BSA and BMI between age groups (p<0.001). There were significant differences in weight and BMI between girls and boys in children aged 10 to 12 (p=0.030, p=0.037) respectively. There were significant differences in weight, BSA and BMI in children aged 12-14 and between girls and boys (respectively, p<0.001, p=0.009, p=0.013). The conclusion was that there was no statistically significant difference in body parameters between the left and the right children.
