Osmanlı Devleti’nin hem karada hem de denizde yürüttüğü faaliyetlerin, bir mekânın (Gelibolu) ele geçirilmesiyle ve bir insanın (Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa) devletin hizmetine alınmasıyla nasıl ivme kazandığı, karada ve denizde bölgesel ölçekte verilen mücadelenin nasıl da küresel bir mahiyete taşındığı makalemizde ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu ana düşünce kapsamında jeostratejik bir konumda yer alan Gelibolu’nun Osmanlı donanmasının merkez üssü olarak yüzyıllar boyunca kullanılması “mekânın” devletin askerî, siyasî ve idarî politikasında ne kadar önemli olduğunu göstermiştir. Aynı şekilde, kazanılan zaferlerin, genişletilen sınırların, bir coğrafyadaki (Kuzey Afrika ve Akdeniz) hâkimiyetin “nitelikli insan” unsuruna bağlı olduğu Barbaros’un Osmanlı hizmetine girmesiyle daha iyi anlaşılmıştır. Bir mekân olarak “Cezâyir-i Bahri Sefîd” eyaleti ve bu mekâna anlam katan bir “insan” olarak Kaptan-ı Derya Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa Osmanlı Devleti’nin Akdeniz’deki hakimiyetini sağlayan iyi “mekân” ve seçilen doğru “insan” başarıyı kaçınılmaz hale getirmiştir. This article tries to show how marine and terrestrial practices of the Ottoman Empire gained speed and how the struggle on land and sea on a regional level acquired a global significance when a particular place – Gallipoli – was conquered and when one particular man – Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha – was employed by the state. Following this overall thesis the article draws attention to the use of Gallipoli as a central base by the Ottoman fleet over centuries due to its geo-strategic qualities. This shows how important the place was in the military, political and administrative policies of the state. Likewise, the employment of Barbaros by the Ottoman Empire is essential to show that victories, the expanded borders and the overlordship in a region (North Africa and the Mediterranean) all depend on a qualified man. The province of “Cezâyir-i Bahri Sefîd” as a well-chosen place and the “captain of the sea” Barbarossa Khar al-Din Pasha as a well-chosen person who made this place meaningful would become the two elements that secured the overlordship of the Ottoman state in the Mediterranean.
