Abstract:

The increase in the number of disasters and the loss of life and property due to disasters in recent years has increased the importance of individuals' awareness of disasters. Education and social studies course plays an important role in creating disaster awareness in individuals. For this reason, it is important to determine the awareness of social studies teacher candidates, who will undertake the task of teaching social studies in the future, about disasters. In this context, the aim of the research is to determine the disaster awareness levels of social studies teacher candidates. The research was carried out in the general scanning model. The sample of the research consists of 254 social studies teacher candidates, who are studying at state universities in the Central Anatolia Region in the 2019-2020 academic year and determined according to easily accessible sampling. Data were collected with the Disaster Awareness Scale developed by Kırıkkaya and Gerdan (2019). The data obtained from the scale were analyzed with independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) since it provided the normal distribution condition and other assumptions. As a result of the research, it was determined that the disaster awareness levels of the social studies teacher candidates were at a moderate level. In addition, while disaster awareness levels of teacher candidates differ significantly according to gender, mother's education level, father's education level, having experienced a disaster before and participating in a disaster-themed activity; it was concluded that there was no significant difference according to family income level.
