Özet:

Stoic philosophy is the most important philosophical doctrine of the Hellenistic age. Zenon, the founder of the Stoic philosophy, opened the “Stoa poikile” school in Athens towards the end of the 4th century, influenced by Socrates, Plato's thoughts, the most important philosophers of the first era philosophy, and kynik view. The school, which is divided into three major periods, provided its real development as the dominant philosophy of the Roman Empire. The Stoic teachings are based on human independence, achieving happiness around the main thoughts of living in accordance with nature, instinct, passions, virtue, purpose, good and bad. So, when one contradicts nature, she/he leaves the control of her/his life to passions, fears and virtueless. The study, which emerged from this teaching, aims to find out how Roger Michell’s Changing Lanes (2002) film was interpreted from the Stoic perspective. The film was evaluated with Stoic teachings such as the conflict between emotion and rationality, the inhibition of passions in reaching happy life and the tendency of man to live in harmony with nature. The main argument of the study is that the Stoic philosophy can be used as a thinking practice that enables reaching happiness even centuries later. A qualitative analysis method was used in the analysis of the film evaluated in the study within the framework of Stoa philosophy concepts. In this context, the teachings are reproduced in the film, with the characters achieving “apatheia” at the end of the film and overcoming things that could hinder their happiness. In this respect the study is important in terms of revealing the tendency of cinema to benefit from philosophical texts.
