Çektiği sıra dışı fotoğrafları ile sanat dünyasının yaşayan en tuhaf fotoğrafçılarından biri olan Joel Peter Witkin ölüm, kutsallık, ahlak ve şehvet konularını kompozisyonlarının merkezine almaktadır. Sanatçının ürpertici tarzının, hayatı boyunca peşini bırakmayan travmatik denebilecek olaylar ile şekillendiği düşünülmektedir. Fotoğraf çekmeye küçük yaşlarda bir kitap yardımı ile kullanmayı öğrendiği bir fotoğraf makinesini satın alarak başlamış olan Witkin ileriki dönemlerde sanatçı olan erkek kardeşinin de desteği ile sanat dünyasına girmeyi başarmış bir sanatçıdır. Sanat hayatı boyunca ampüte, dışlanmış, anormal ya da ölmüş insanlar ile birçok ürkütücü seri oluşturmuş ve seyircisini her karede karanlık bir romantizmin derinliklerine çekmiştir. Sanatçı geleneksel baskı tekniğini kullanarak çektiği fotoğraflar üzerinde bir takım ağartma ve tonlama işlemleri yapmış, yer yer resimleri çizerek onlara eskiymiş gibi bir görünüm sağlamıştır. Sanatçının en ünlü serilerinden biri ölü doğa fotoğraflarıdır. Canlı nesnelerin ceset parçalarıyla yan yana getirilerek düzenlendiği fotoğraflar arasında en ilginç kompozisyonların bu ölü doğa serilerinden çıktığı düşünülmektedir. Bu araştırmada tarihsel yöntem tekniği kullanılmıştır. Sonuç olarak Joel Peter Witkin gibi sanatın sınırlarını zorlayan sıra dışı bir fotoğraf sanatçısının ölü doğa resimlerinde ölü beden parçalarını hangi şekillerde kullandığı ve bu çalışmaların alt yapısında ne tür psikolojik nedenler yattığı ortaya koyulmuştur

The creepy style of the artist is thought to have been shaped by traumatic events that have been pursued throughout her life. He started taking pictures at an early age and learned to use the camera with a book and in the following years he was an artist who has managed to become a part of the art world with the support of her artist brother. Throughout his art life, he has created many frightening series with amputees, outsider, abnormal or dead people, and has drawn his audience into the depths of dark romance in every frame. The artist made some bleaching and toning processes on the photographs he took using the traditional printing technique, and sometimes gave them the appearance as if they were old. One of his most famous series is still life photographs. The most interesting compositions among the photographs in which living objects are brought together by corpse parts are thought to have come from these still life series. In this research, historical method technique was used. As a result, it is revealed that an unusual photographer Joel Peter Witkin who pushes the limits of art uses dead body parts in still life compositions and what kind of psychological reasons lie in the infrastructure of these studies.
