Brigandage incidents can be seen in many regions of Ottoman Empire between the years 1789-1808. Due to a decline in the authority of the Ottoman Empire, some local administrators or influential people inclined to act illegally out of self-interest. These types of incidents which created social unrest can be seen in Menteşe Sanjak as well. Brigandage incidents observed in Meneteşe Sanjak generally emerged because of the power struggle between influential families in the area. Residing in different sub-districts of the Sanjak, these families had a voice in the area by taking on responsibilities in administrations. Using the state facilities for their own benefit, the families either acted with the brigands in line with their interests with the men they gathered or directly engaged in brigandage activities. In addition to these families, other people also gathered power and committed brigandage in the area. Plundering people’s property, taking their lives and dishonouring their chastity, these brigands caused an unrest in the region. The Ottoman Empire, which absolutely did not allow any brigandage activities, ensured that those responsible were caught and punished to prevent such events.
