2022 yılının sonuna sadece birkaç gün kala, zamansız kaybettiğimiz sevgili hocam ve yol arkadaşım Prof.Dr. Nilüfer Çağatay’ın ardından, Mülkiye Dergisi Feminist Politika Özel Sayısı’nda, onun iktisat biliminin sınırlarını aşan feminist ideallerini ve o ideallerin bir gün hayata geçirilmesine yönelik umudumuzu bu yazı aracılığıyla sizlerle paylaşmak isterim. Nilüfer Çağatay’ı tanımayanlar için birkaç cümleyle, özgeçmişe yazılan başarılarından bahsedeyim. Nilüfer, 1955 yılında hukukçu memur bir ailede, Ankara’da doğar. O dönemlerde memur çocuklarının erişebildiği olanaklarla, başarılı öğrenciliği sayesinde Robert Kolejini bitirir ve üniversite eğitimi için ABD’ye gider. 1978 yılında Yale Üniversitesi’nde İktisat lisans derecesini alır. Daha sonra ise Stanford Üniversitesi’nden kabul almayı başarır; yüksek lisans ve doktora derecesini yine İktisat alanında tamamlar. Doktora öğrenciliği sırasında araştırma görevliliği yapar ve New School’da akademik kariyeri başlar; Uluslararası İktisat, İktisadi Düşünce Tarihi, Politik İktisat derslerini verir. 1990’ların ilk yıllarında New School’da Korkut Ertürk ile tanışır ve birlikte Utah Üniversitesi İktisat Bölümü’ne girerler ve derslere orada devam ederler. Aynı zamanda yol arkadaşı ve çok değer verdiği dostu feminist iktisadın mimarlarından Günseli Berik de aynı bölümde çalışmaya başlar. Bugün düşündüğümde; Nilüfer o hiç sevemediği, yıllar geçmiş olsa da alışamadığı, Salt Lake City’e gelme kararını almamış olmasaydı, belki de onu tanıma fırsatım hiç olmayacaktı… Benim Nilüfer’le tanışmam ve buluşmam ise 2001 yılında Utah İktisat doktora programına katılmamla oldu.
In the end of 2022, only a few days later, my dear teacher and roadmate Prof. Dr. Following Nilüfer Çağatay, I would like to share with you through this article in the Special Number of the Feminist Politics Magazine, his feminist ideals that exceed the limits of economic science and our hope for the implementation of those ideals one day. For those who don’t know the Nilufer Çağatay, I’ll tell you with a few sentences about the successes written in the CV. Nilüfer was born in 1955 in a family of legal officers in Ankara. During those periods, with the possibilities that the officer’s children could access, thanks to his successful studenthood, he graduated from Robert College and went to the United States for university education. In 1978 he obtained a degree in Economics at Yale University. He then succeeded in receiving admission from Stanford University and completed his graduate and doctorate degree in Economics again. During his doctoral degree he performs research responsibilities and starts his academic career at New School, he gives courses in International Economics, Economic Thought History, Political Economics. In the early 1990s, they met Korkut Ertürk at New School and joined the Utah University Department of Economics and continued their courses there. At the same time, his companion and his friendly feminist economist architects, Günseli Berik, also starts working in the same section. When I think today, Nilüfer would not have had the decision to come to Salt Lake City, which he had never liked, which he had not been used to, which he had not had taken the decision to come to Salt Lake City, maybe I would never have had the opportunity to know him... I would not meet Nilüfer and I would not meet him when I participated in the Utah Economy PhD program in 2001.
