Abstract Aim of this study is to examine the 3rd and 4th chapters entitled with “On the qualities required by the student of medicine” and “On the right estimate of treatment and on the avoidance of hurry in it” of the 4th article of the 7th newʿ on Indian medicine in Firdaws al-Ḥikma, which is accepted as one of the first medical encyclopedic works in medieval Islamic world, written by Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Sahl Rabban al-Ṭabarī. For this reason, a printed copy of Firdaws al-Ḥikma edited by Doctor Muḥammad Zubayr al-Ṣiddīqī and printed in the Buch- u. Kunstdruckerei “Sonne” G.m.b.H. in Berlin in 1928 was examined. An English Translation of the Sushruta Samhita Based on Original Sanskrit Text, vol. I-Sutrasthanam, edited by Kavitaj Kunja Lal Bhishagratna and printed in Calcutta in 1907 was used for comparison. Abovementioned Arabic chapters in Ṭabarī’s text were translated into Turkish. The translated chapters, which were presented in “findings” section of the article, were handled in “discussion” section and were compared with the text of Suśruta-Saṃhitā and were discussed in the light of literature. It was found that Ṭabarī used sources of Indian medicine and folk in the chapters of this article, but adapted them instead of direct quotation and he benefited from Suśruta-Saṃhitā and Kalīla and Dimna, which is a book of stories originated from India and he made some contributions to them.
