Abstract:

Temettuat books are official records created in the 19th century for the purpose of making economic arrangements, determining the wealth of the people and collecting taxes according to everyone's economic power. It is one of the renewal movements of the Tanzimat period. It provides rich information about legal, administrative, financial, social and demographic structure of the Ottoman Empire. It is one of the first-hand sources that should be consulted in economic, social and cultural studies related to Ottoman history. Especially, it plays an important role in studying of the 19th century Ottoman socio- economic history. In the mentioned books, inhabited (housing) centers such as township (district), neighborhood and village etc. were handled for house one by one, and the information about personal property, real estate, land and animals belonging to the heads of households was written. Annual income of tax payers was determined and households (houses) were held responsible for/over this income. Each household (house) was counted as a tax payer. In this study, the socio- economic structure of people will be discussed in the light of ML.VRD.TMT.d, 00798 numbered temettuât book belonging to the neighborhoods and villages of Kırşehir. In this context, living in the neighborhoods and villages mentioned in the book; names of household heads, their family names, titles, nicknames, occupations, acreage of vineyards, gardens and fields, genus and numbers of cattle and ovine animals; immovable assets such as mills, shops, and bezirhanes will be discussed and evaluated by statistical data.
