Abstract:

Throughout history, civilizations were interacting with each other in many subjects. One of these interactions is interplay in music. It is known that Turkish music inspired many musicians, from great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary musicians. Joe Satriani, one of the most important guitarists of the last thirty years, was likewise influenced by Aşık Veysel, who was one of the last representatives of the Anatolian bard tradition and tried to explain Aşık Veysel with his musical expression. This research aims to discover the elements that can be related to Veysel in the context of singing and playing techniques in work named by ASIK VEYSEL, which is composed by world-famous guitarist Joe Satriani, influenced by Aşık Veysel's music. From the music of Veysel, we explore how the elements of traditional Turkish music were adapted to the modal music by Satriani. The research conducted with a survey model of descriptive research methods. Satriani, in his work written for Aşık Veysel, adapted many elements that breathed in Turkish Folk Music, and interested in which sequences of the modal music corresponded to the tune of Veysel's creation. He attempted to reflect the playing techniques of baglama, which is the essential instrument of Turkish Folk Music, on the electric guitar. When selecting chords with harmonic elements of the work, he used quartet ranges and power chords in a similar way to the two-tone performances of Turkish music.
