Abstract:

Abstract: Psychoanalytic that considers subconscious as the driving force behind humans’ actions is highly significant in terms of the character analysis in literature. Psychoanalytic whose founder was Sigmund Freud became widespread with names such as Adler, Jung and Lacan and it became applicable in work of art. In this study, Susanna Tamaro’s children’s book Tobias and the Angel was investigated with Jung’s psychoanalytic perspective .Descriptive research methods were used and document review method was used as the tool for data collection. The book was supplied for the study, findings that constitute research subject were determined and a relationship was built between the book and Jung’s psychoanalytic perspective. In research framework the question of “what are the psychoanalytic components that Susanna Tamaro’s novel Tobias and The Angel include?” was tried to be answered. According to Jung, to interpret personality it is necessary to answer some questions. Foremost among them are questions such as what the parts of personality are, what sources of energy that trigger personality to take action are and how personality is formed. In Jung’s theory there are concepts like ego, archetype, persona, anima, animus, shadow, dynamism of psyche, values, development and retreat of spiritual energy, personality development and psychological characters.  Jung thinks that the author cannot reflect himself/herself completely in writing process. A driving force takes control of the author and literary work comes to existence on its own. This can be described as a situation in which literary work does not want to involve in the sentences that the author wants to write. When examined in the concept of ego proposed by Jung, the protagonist, Martina, in Tobias and The Angel could not complete her personality development as she was a little child. The other concept dynamism of psyche expresses the displacement and distribution of the energy. It is not possible that psyche can reach absolute balance and all Martina’s effort is to reach that balance. With this interdisciplinary study which included literature and psychology, it was aimed to contribute to literature and raise awareness.
