Abstract Considered “the only formal program of translation theory in Renaissance France” (Norton 1984: 103), the classic text by Étienne Dolet, La manière de bien traduire d’une langue en autre (1540), is herein analyzed in its structure and content, accompanied with a few remarks on its underlying thought, formed by the classical rhetorical theory, understood as the conception of language then in force in the 16th century.
