Introduction: Body dissatisfaction is established by the difference between the body pattern considered ideal by society and the body that each individual has, a situation that can cause psychological and physiological disorders. Objective: To evaluate the perception of body image and associated factors in university students. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional and analytical study, with 263 medical students, where the perception of self-image was evaluated; the practice of physical activity; the body shape, through the silhouette scale; and sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral factors. Binary logistic regression was applied to determine the odds ratio of the variables investigated to be associated with concern about body image (p<0.05). The study had ethical approval for its execution. Results: In the study it was found that the concern about body image was noticed in 15.6% of respondents. However, the dissatisfaction shown by the silhouette scale was more common in 67.3%, with the very dissatisfied category representing 52.1% of the total. Significant differences were found with increased chances of worrying about body image among students from the 3rd to the 6th year of the course, who were not sedentary, had complaints or health problems and were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their figure. Conclusion: The importance of measures that favor the promotion and prevention of health, as well as greater satisfaction with the silhouette among students, is highlighted. Thus, it is suggested that the development of intervention strategies for this population can reduce disorders related to the perception of body image.
