Abstract:

After accepting Islam, Turks met with a completely new culture they started inheriting along with the fundamental features of their pre-Islamic cultural heritage. Kutadgu Bilig is a work created in that period and it is very important from the aspect of Turkish culture, Turkish language and Turkish literature. Yusuf Has Hâcib completed this work in 1070 and dedicated it to Karakhanid ruler Tavgaç Buğra Han. Kutadgu Bilig is a didactic work. The main topic of the work is “the ideal human being“. The work explains how a human being should behave to be happy in both worlds. Using certain words enables advising rulers and thus explains what an ideal government should be like. Yusuf Has Hâcib in Kutadgu Bilig attaches particular importance to proverbs and phrasemes to attract even greater attention of readers and impose further influence on them. Kutadgu Bilig particularly attracts attention with its language and style, primarily because proverbs and phrasemes take a very important place in this work. Relying on the fundamental aspects of cognitive linguistics, this paper analyses the meaning of phrasemes in Kutadgu Bilig where lexeme elig (hand / fist) appears as a somatic component. There is a claim in cognitive linguistics stating that the meaning of phrasemes is motivated by human conceptual system. Cognitive linguistics considers that the meaning of phrasemes is based on cognitive mechanisms, such as conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy. The primary objective of the paper is to point out the cognitive mechanisms motivating the meaning of phrasemes where lexeme elig (hand / fist) appears as a component, marking a part of human body with a very important role in almost all physical activities.
