Abstract:

Sir Charkashîzadah Mehmet Tawfiq is an important scholar who lived in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, grew up in a family of scholars who are interested in the science and Sufism, and took lessons in theology, logic, fiqh, vocabulary, syntax, literature and philosophy from many experts in various regions. In addition, he served the state by serving as kadi, professor, undersecretary and minister during his lifetime. The fact that Charkashîzadah wrote works on Islamic sciences, especially on the science of kalam, during his lifetime is a remarkable issue considering that there was a decline in Islamic sciences at that time. As a matter of fact, the disorders in the education system at that time and the currents that emerged in the West negatively affected the Islamic world. Therefore, in this period, it was emphasized that the Islamic sciences should be able to give direction to the society and respond to the problems and needs of the period. In this period, innovation movements emerged in the science of kalam as well as in Islamic sciences. Charkashîzadah's emphasis on theological issues should be accepted as a step towards interpreting the issues of faith according to the conditions of his time. In our article, we will focus on the understanding of faith, based on the doctrinal treatises of Charkashîzadah, entitled Miftâhu'l-Akâid, Meziyyet-i İslamiyye and el-İtkan fî Tahkîki'l-İmân, which he wrote on the science of kalam. In this context, the meaning of the word faith, the nature of faith, comprehensive and detailed faith, the relationship between faith and action, the increase and decrease in faith, exception in faith and faith of the emulative will be discussed.
