Abstract:

Listening, one of the four basic language skills, is of great importance in terms of establishing correct communication. In the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, it is stated that, in order for foreign language learners to comprehend the texts they are exposed to, the listening text recordings and dubbings should be presented in a slow and clear manner, including those at B1 level. In this respect, listening texts should be arranged in a way that the listener can understand, in other words, they should be adapted to the levels of the learners. Otherwise, the target audience may face difficulties in comprehending the text. This study, which aims to determine the speech rate of the listening texts in the textbooks used in the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language, was determined as a qualitative research. In the research, a case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was conducted. In the study, document analysis method was used to obtain data. The research objects of the study is composed of the recorded listening texts in the textbooks of Yedi İklim Türkçe Öğretim Seti (meaning, Seven Climate Turkish Teaching Set) (YİTÖS) A1, A2, B1 Levels and Gazi Turkish Teaching Set for Foreigners (GAZİ) A1, A2, B1 Levels. It has been determined that the number of listening activities in the YİTÖS textbooks, which were included in the scope of the study, was 45% higher than that of the listening activities in Gazi textbooks. In the study, it was concluded that the average number of words per minute in the listening activities included in the Gazi A1, A2, B1 textbooks was 37% higher than the YİTÖS A1, A2, B1 textbooks, and even the speech rate in the Gazi A1 textbook was higher than that of the YİTÖS B1 textbook.
