Amerikalı yazar Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) ve Fransız yazar Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) kısa öykü türünde ilk edebî ürünleri veren isimlerdir. Bu iki ismin ardından türün yayılmasına katkı sağlayan isimler ise Rus yazarlar Nikolay Vasilyeviç Gogol (1809-1852) ve Anton Pavloviç Çehov (1860-1904) olmuştur. Adı geçen isimler sayesinde XIX. Yüzyılda ortaya çıkan ve kısa sürede tüm dünyaya yayılan kısa öykünün, ilgili dönemde edebî tür ve tarz konusunda Batı edebiyatından fazlasıyla etkilenen Arap coğrafyasında da ortaya çıktığını söylemek mümkündür. Daha önce Kur’an kıssaları ve diğer hikâye anlatılarıyla kendi kültüründe tahkiye etme geleneğini yaşatan Arap coğrafyasında modern anlamda ilk kısa öykünün 1917 yılında Muhammed Teymûr tarafından neşredilen Fi’l-Kitâr (Trende) isimli eser olduğu aktarılır.
